One of the most significant considerations when searching for wooden toys is the sort of material utilized. And if you use FSC, the timber is more expensive than regular wood.
Different woods have unique properties that make them better or worse suited to specific types of toys. The market offers three types of wooden toys: solid wood toys, composite wood toys, and plastic wood toys. Solid wood
Toys are constructed entirely of natural wood, with no artificial binders or fillers. These toys are often more expensive than composite or plastic wood toys, but they are also more long-lasting and environmentally sustainable. If you want a high-quality wooden toy, choose solid wood. Wood toys are made primarily from beech, juniper, pine, and rubber wood. The table below shows the features of the primary solid woods.
Material | Production Place | Features | Weight | range of application |
New Zealand pine | New Zealand | soft wood and the wood grain is fine, Oil grain on the surface | 1, Suitable for making white body or varnished products 2, not easy to do colored products and car wood accessories | 1, Suitable for making white body or varnished products 2, Not easy to do colored products and car wood accessories |
Juniper wood | China | Hardwood and fine, light gray, straight Woodgrain | 510kg/m³ | Suitable for small pieces of toys, such as blocks, small accessories, etc. |
Hardwood and fine, light gray, straight Woodgrain | Germany | red beech, white beech, The wood is hard and dense, with Uniform color and texture | 770kg/m³ | Suitable for all cases where the price is acceptable |
Rubber wood | Malaysia, Thailand | Beechwood | 650kg/m³ | suitable for white body or varnish products; Because of the smell and mildew, generally do not use rubber wood |
Hardwoods such as beech and rubber are extremely robust and make excellent choices for toys that will be subjected to frequent use. Softer woods, such as pine, are less expensive, but they may not last as long.
Composite wood toys combine real wood and chemical binders or fillers. These toys are typically less priced than solid wooden toys, but they are also less durable. Composite wood toys may contain formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, so look for eco-friendly alternatives constructed with non-toxic binders and fillers. Wooden toys are primarily made of composite wood such as basswood plywood, birch plywood, poplar plywood, and MDF. The table below shows the qualities of those woods.
Material | Production Place | Features | Weight | Range of application | Measure |
Bass plywood | Germany | 620kg/m³ | 920 x 920 mm | Suit for puzzles, and and large area toys and test the structure of the demanding accessories or products white body or varnished accessories; colored accessories can also be used, but the side is not easy to handle. | 920x920mm |
Birch plywood | Russia | Consistent color, large area, and hardness | 640kg/m³ | same as bass plywood | 920x920mm |
Poplar plywood | China | More light color, Large area, soft, easily discolored | 620kg/m3 | 920 x 920 mm | 630kg/m³ |
